United Kingdom

The UK is a very popular study abroad location, due in no small part to its long and illustrious history as an educational hub that dates back hundreds of years. Also widely regarded for its rich history, culture, and language, the UK is also a common destination because it has a strong base of comprehensive support systems that have been put in place to benefit international students. Studying here is certainly an experience to remember!

WORK WHILE YOU ARE STUDYING

Students on a UK study visa are allowed to hold a part-time (20 hours per week) job during term time and a full-time job during the break. The job you work doesn’t necessarily have to be on campus either. Employment is relatively easy to find in the UK. Naturally, it will be easier to secure employment in a larger city such as London rather than a relatively small one like Oxford. Students working a menial job in the service industry (where most employment is found) can expect to earn in the region of 8-11GBP per hour.

Education & Living Costs

The costs associated with studying in the UK are dependent on a few different factors. These include the institution, course, and the location, not to mention the availability of scholarships or other funding. The thing that attracts a lot of foreign students to the UK for their studies is the shorter course duration. An undergraduate degree can be obtained in 3 years, whereas a Masters takes just 1. Tuition fees begin at £11,000 per year, whereas general living costs in London will amount to around the same again. Outside of London, the living cost can sink to as low as £7,000 per year.

Health Supports

We all know that moving abroad can be tough. It can be hard to settle in. Luckily, most academic bodies in the UK run orientation programs designed to help new students settle in and make friends. Attending these will also help you get used to your new city. In the unlikely event that you find yourself needing medical attention while in the UK, you can access their healthcare service, the NHS, if you have been living there for over 6 months. We would recommend registering with a local doctor at the first available opportunity after you arrive. Local doctors can help you with a wide range of ailments. You will need to register by bringing them the required documents during consulting hours.
